Ars et Mentis - What's the point of it? / lecture
Invited by the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana, I will give a lecture on: The journey of an artist’s development is often unpredictable, filled with twists and turns of ideas, unfulfilled and realized ambitions, traumatizing experiences, and a constant need for feedback. My own path is no exception. During my decade-long doctoral studies, I explored three radically different approaches to the core research question: What distinguishes the local-to-global from the global-to-local dynamic? The lecture offers a reflection on my journey as a young artist, followed by examples of recent research projects conducted by my doctoral students.

WORKOUT - a fine sense of patriotism / solo show
In the stadium thousands of leotards move in unison to form a rose, a heart, a falcon, a flag. Boys lift girls in the air, they hold hands or embrace one another executing whatever the choreography demands. Their overheated cheeks are not visible from the bleachers. Signs and motifs alternate with slogans of dubious ideologies and commands yelled over the mobilizing beat. From the distance everything seems dynamic and eternal, young and conservative, global and patriotic, nonsensical and meaningful. This is the 100th anniversary of the forming of Czechoslovakia, on the hottest summer on record in Prague. The Sokol slet is the flocking of falcons.

British Journal of Photography / issue #7871
In their 2018 May issue BJP is focusing on works presented during Hamburg Triennial of Photography.
“From the 320 artists included in the festival’s open submissions, we bring you our favourites – including Salvatore Vitale and his project on Switzerland’s obsession with security, which scrutinises the ways in which it shapes not only the environment, but also the Swiss mentality. Sarker Protick draws our focus towards Bangladesh’s Padma River, offering a stark warning of rising water levels, while Gábor Arion Kudász’s Human is a study of mankind via the metaphor of a humble brick.”

[Enter] on a breaking point and necessity to change / group show
“Humanity is at breaking point. Seismic change now seems unavoidable. In the face of increased global challenges, from climate change to the migrant crisis, political unrest, cyber-attacks and the threat of terrorism, photography has the ability to bring focus to these issues. The exhibition is a showcase of 15 artists whose work digs deep into social, political, and environmental narratives defining our global world. With strength and determination, they make work that unflinchingly challenges social structures and abuses of power.”

Conscientious Portfolio Competition 2016
winners: Katrin Koenning, Gábor Arion Kudász, Andrejs Strokins
HUMAN was selected by Felix Hoffmann: “The series contains different aspects of thinking. There is a documentary approach to a site where people are working with clay. There is a surrealistic approach, a reflection of the material and physicality of the objects. And there is a scientific interaction in these pictures where the viewer doesn’t know any longer why they might have been taken. The project is an interesting mixture of different directions in photography, involving us as viewers.”

Capa Grand Prize 2015 / Award ceremony
“The jury of the Capa Grand Prize Hungary selected Gábor Arion Kudász for his entry HUMAN as the first Grand Prize winner in 2015.
The Robert Capa Photography Grand Prize Hungary was founded in October 2014 by the Capa Center in order to recognize the work of artists who produce an outstanding achievement in the field of Hungarian photography. The awards were decided in two stages by the jury of Hungarian and international professionals, Regina Anzenberger, Dimitri Beck, Clare Grafik, Attila Horányi, Peter Korniss and Mónika Perenyei.
In May the jury selected three candidates – and awarded each of them with a fellowship to complete their projects. The jury appreciated Gábor Arion Kudász’s work completed in the last six month, so they selected him as the first Grand Prize Hungary-winning photographer in 2015. Gábor Arion Kudász received the award on the eve of Robert Capa’s 102nd birthday.”
